INTRODUCTION
Haripur is a city in Haripur District in the Hazara some 65 km(40mi) north of Islamabad and 35 km(22mi)south of Abbottabad, in a hilly plain area at on altitude of 250mi(1,706ft). The city is situated on the Karakorum highway.(N35)
History
Haripur was founded by the Sikh general "Hari Singh Nalwa" in 1822 and become headquarters of Hazara(until 1853). Hari Singh Nalwa was appointed by Sikh leader "Ranjit Sing" as the second Nazim of Hazara after the first Nazim "Amar Singh Majithia" was killed by local populace of Nara.Haripur was built as a fortress surrounded by a wall which was 4 yard (3.7m) thick and 16 yard (15m) high and had only four openings that fort later become the "City Police Station".
There are the famous campus of "Allama Iqbal Open University" and a campus of "Hazara university Dhodial Mansehra". Haripur is the famous for its greenery and is a source of nursery plants ornamental and forest plants for the rest of KPK (Khyber Pakthun Khawa) and Pakistan.Drinking water was provided by digging a tank. many small drainage were dug to carry sullage  water. A small river the river "Dore" passing through the city feed the Tarbela Dam.
"Baren Hugal" visited the town on Dec 23, 1835 and the found the town humming with activity the Municipality was constituted in 1867.
An obelisk marks the grave of "Colonel Conara"  European  officer of Sikh artillery who fell in 1848 defending his guns single handed against the insurgents under "Chattar Sing" in 1851 the 4th (Hazara) mountain battery was raised from Hazara gunners who were trained by "Major Abbott" a British officer and first deputy commissioner of Hazara in order to defend the Hazara district.

The Hazara embanked on many campaigns through out the. the province population in 1901 was 5,578 and the income and expenditure  during the ten years ending 1902-3 averaged Rs. 17,800. in 1903-4 the income and expenditure were Rs. 19,100 & Rs. 20,000 respectively.
Geographical Features
Haripur is a green valley rich in fruits and vegetables and serves as the base market for the mountainous cities of Abbottabad and Mansehra the Lest of Hazara division. the main language spoken in Haripur is "Hindko"   
which is related language like Panjabi, Potohari, Gojri and Urdu.Khanpur  is the one of the main area of Haripur is famous for it red blood orange. To the north the world's largest rock fill dam, the "Tarbela Dam" 
Close the city of Haripur also lies the industrial area of  Hattar. Another major industry lying at the outside of the city "The Telephone industry of Pakistan (T I P) the biggest telephone industry in Asia". located just next TIP is National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).

THE LARGEST EARTH AND ROCK FILL DAM IN THE WORLD TARBELA DAM (PAKISTAN)

The project located at a narrow spot in the Indus river valley, at Tarbela in Haripur, shortly located at the point from where the district Swabi starts. The main wall of the build of earth and rock fill, stretches 2,743 meters(8,999ft) from the island to river right, standing 148 meters(486ft)high.
A hydroelectric power plant an the right side of the main dam houses 14 generators fed with water from out let tunnels 1, 2 and 3. There are four 175MW generators on tunnel 1, six 175MW. Generators on tunnel 2, and four 432 MW generator on tunnel 3, for a total generating capicity of 3,478MW.there are two main Indus river tributaries upstream of the Tarbela dam these are the Shyok river, joining near Skardu and the Siron river near near Tarbela. The Tarbela Dam is the third largest in term of Dam volume in the world.
Tarbela dam project resulted from a water treaty guaranteed Pakistan supplies independent of upstream control by India. Turquoise water of the Indus river reflect the high proportion of silt and clay suspended in water released by the spillways.The Tarbela dam is the largest earth and rock fill dam in the world.
there have been environmental consequences to the Indus river delta, Reduction of seasoned flloding and reduced water flows the delta have decreased mangrove stand and the abundance of some fish species.
